the experiment
This design emerged from an experiment exploring what could be created using a single material, mild steel, and one basic tool, a wrench.
While a wrench is typically associated with tightening and loosening fasteners, positioning it out of the original context and as the primary making tool, opens a completely new mode of material exploration.
Reducing the number of tools used in the making process encourages a thorough exploration of the material’s properties, strengths, and limitations.
Thinner mild steel can be easily bent by hand. A bend reinforces the material, resulting in a stable and supportive seating structure.
Exploring the use of a wrench for texturing and manipulating mild steel resulted in a rhythmic pattern that allows for a controlled bending angle.
the stool
The final design consists of a base made from two identical bent sheets and a seat formed from a smaller sheet, which is textured and shaped using a wrench. Through precise angling, the seat rests securely on the base without the need for additional joints.
