The Ogi dripper, also featured in the Coffee Artifacts project, is a study of steel craft and hand brew coffee.
Inner walls of the dripper feature raised ribs to allow proper air and water flow during brewing.
The dripper stand allows for monitoring the drip flow.
The set is completed with a measuring spoon. One flat scoop amounts to 12g of coffee.
This project was based on the "design-through-making" method. New ideas and refinements emerged directly in the workshop, rather than from calculations on paper or in 3D modeling software.
Hand brewing coffee can be a very rigid process, in which the dripper plays the main role. It's a device that is both simple and complicated to make. Mass produced coffee drippers are extremely precise in order to provide a reliable brew each time. Matter of fact it that with a hand crafted dripper you cannot replicate the same effect.
So even if you are well versed in your standard dripper routine, a hand-made one will require a slight learning curve. To some, this can prove to only be annoying, while to others it is a welcomed challenge and another coffee puzzle to solve. Personally, it has been a lot of fun for me. While I still sometimes use my old plastic dripper, most mornings I find myself reaching for Ogi and it remains my favourite design project to this date.
The making process included laser cutting the flat dripper shape, adding ribbing on a bead roller, hand rolling it into a cone and spot welding.
